Upon entering our church, you are greeted by candles glowing;
Sacred music fills the air; voices lifted declaring glory.
You are greeted by a bright smile, perhaps a warm hug or holy kiss.
Someone offers a hymnal, a seat, a helping hand.
We are eager to worship together. To eat together. To be... together.
We are pilgrims in this sacred space.
The images remind us that our family is bigger than the seen.
Heaven and earth are joined.
This is our community. You are welcome. You are home.
This beautiful sense of place requires all of us doing our part. We choose to see those around us. We find a service book for the newcomer. We help the flustered parent. We make sure everyone has a seat who wants one, sharing our space. We explain communion. We encourage those around us to connect during fellowship. We ask questions. We truly care. It's who we are. And it takes all of us.
One way to purposefully engage is to be an usher. Ushers are responsible for the logistics that create our culture. Ushers make a point to greet each parishioner as they enter. Ushers make sure candles are stocked, service books are available, bandaids/tissues are nearby, ready for whatever the service brings. Ushers ensure donations are securely transported to the Treasurer. Ushers help the clergy maintain the sanctity and flow of the service.
