Workday with Mother Cassisan
Protection of the Holy Virgin Monastery
July 29, 2023
A hardy group of 8 St. Spyridon parishioners made the trek over Pikes Peak to join with parishioners from Holy Theophany Orthodox Church in Colorado Springs to cut trees and prepare wood to provide heat heating for Mother Cassiana. Mother is the caretaker of the Protection of the Holy Virgin Monastery near Lake George, CO.
Those participating included Isaac Johnson, Marius (Asher) Herbert, Owen Thomas, Conner Gibson, Eli Jones, Seth Hebbert, Dn. Mark, and Sh. Ina. We had a wonderful time together, cutting down old trees and splitting the wood to get it ready for use during the coming fall and winters.
A good time was had by all.
The Monastery of the Protection of the Holy Virgin was founded in 1993 under the auspices of His Grace Bishop Tikhon of the OCA. The sisterhood first rented a small house in the prairie town of Calhan, located east of Colorado Springs, until they could raise enough resources for a down payment for land of their own. The search led the sisters to the mountains west of Pikes Peak where they acquired 10.3 acres with a 3000 square foot house. In 1999, an additional 3.5 acres of forest land was added to the monastery. In the last couple of years, an Orthodox Church has been constructed and consecrated on the main property. If you would like to visit, the Monastery is not on-line, so you will need to contact Mother Cassian at 719-748-3999 or by mail at PO Box 416, Lake George, CO 80827. Anyone desiring to spend the night MUST call before coming. It is a beautiful and peaceful location, full of God’s love.
