Storybook Connections is an outreach ministry of St. Spyridon Church to the families of those incarcerated at the Larimer County Jail.
St. Spyridon Orthodox Church is partnering with Orthodox Christian Prison Ministry (OCPM), an agency of the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the United States, to provide connections between those incarcerated and their children. This is accomplished through volunteers who visit the jail and record the parent reading an age-appropriate book to their child. The recording, along with the book, is then sent to the child, who now has a tangible connection to their parent.
Volunteers receive training and an orientation at the jail before participating. They work in teams of two (male & female preferably) to greet the inmate, help them select an appropriate book to read to their child, record them reading the book, and assist them in writing a note to their child that will be included in the book. They also gather vital information needed to send the book to the inmate’s child.
Any adult parishioner at least 21 years of age who is interested in following our Lord’s command to “visit those in prison” is welcome to join us.
We are in need of volunteers to do the recordings at the jail and to process the recordings and mail the book and recording to each child. We are also in need of books (we will provide a list) as well as funding for books, envelopes and postage.
